Remembering Jen Johnston

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Jennifer “Jen” Johnston, who tragically left us on September 23, 2024. Born to Thomas and Deloris Kinsman, Jen grew up surrounded by the love of her large family—brothers Reggie and Wade, and sisters Theresa, Karrie, Sara, and Jessie. She leaves behind her life partner, Dan Anderson, and her children Layla and Stevie Johnston, Charlotte Anderson, and Abel and Serenity Elder, who will carry forward her legacy of love and fun.

For 19 years, Jen was an integral part of ELS, and had recently achieved a well-earned promotion to CAD Professional, which was one of the highest levels for CAD drafting at the company. However, Jen’s impact at ELS went far beyond her title. She was the embodiment of precision and creativity, working tirelessly on a variety of projects, from wetland and critical areas assessments to more long-term and complex marine terminal, shoreline, and mitigation bank projects. Her contributions were fundamental to the success of countless projects, both big and small. As her manager Jack shared, "Jen’s precision, dedication, and unwavering support made her an indispensable member of CAD and I am deeply grateful for all she brought to our team."

Beyond her technical excellence, Jen was a vibrant presence in the office. She filled her workspace with the same energy she brought to her life outside of work. Jen was always the first to support others—whether it was with a project or just encouraging an idea. If there was an opportunity for fun, she’d sign up without hesitation, as one person recalls her being the first to join the company ski trip. Jen had a spirit of adventure which extended beyond the office, often leading to fun, unforgettable experiences for everyone involved.

Her humor and kindness made the office feel like a second home for everyone. Her generous spirit, paired with her wit and laughter, made everyday moments memorable. Jen didn’t just mentor many in their careers; she fostered friendships and brought lightness to even the toughest tasks. Jen’s generosity also extended to those outside ELS, as she regularly contributed to her community by volunteering her time teaching English to local immigrants.

She was known for jamming to music while she worked, her singing and humming filling the office with life. Sometimes, her presence was announced by a simple whistle—heard even through the walls during board meetings. And though she had a fear of heights, she hiked a steep bridge on a company trip, showing that her courage could surpass her comfort zone. She faced challenges with the same enthusiasm and strength that defined her character.

Though Jen is no longer with us, her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and in the work she did so passionately for nearly two decades. We will forever miss her infectious laugh, her music, her kindness, and her presence that made ELS a brighter place.

To support Jen's family through this devastating time, a GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral expenses, household costs, and to provide stability for her children. Any contributions, big or small, will go a long way in helping her loved ones navigate the road ahead. A memorial service will be held on October 12th at 1 pm at Cowlitz River Ranch, 363 Brim Road, Onalaska, WA. Let us gather in her memory, share stories of her laughter, and honor the life of a remarkable woman who will never be forgotten.
