ELS is excited to share the news that we were selected as Industry Partner of the Year by Career Connect Southwest at ESD 112!
ELS biologists Lacey Hoffmann and Beau Johnson participated in a Flipped Internship at the Hockinson School District where students were asked to present their research and proposals to professionals who work in our industry. This was a project-based learning experience for a senior AP environmental science class regarding salmon habitat restoration on the East Fork Lewis River. ELS presented specific information on salmonid population and habitat degradation on the East Fork Lewis River. The students then took that information and focused on proposals to reduce impacts to the habitat.
Career Connect Southwest sent ELS a certificate and had this to say: "Your work on Flipped Internship opportunities in Hockinson School District so valuable in preparing students for meaningful and rewarding careers and demonstrating the power of STEM skills in the real world. Your work reached more than 75 students in 5th and 7th grade as well as high school!! Thank you for your hard work and dedication to student success in this very exceptional year!".
Lacey and Beau said they enjoyed participating in this project and are looking forward to future opportunities with the district. "It was great watching the kids learn about impacts to salmonids near their own homes, and ways to prevent further decline in habitat quality and population.".
